Skincare d'autunno: come preparare la pelle a freddo, umidità e smog

Autumn skincare: how to prepare your skin for cold, humidity, and smog

Autumn has arrived in Milan and, as every year, it brings with it the most demanding season for facial skin. The first cold mornings, the humidity rising from the Naviglio, the heating switched on at home and in the office, the smog that settles over the city on windless days: all of this shows on our skin, day after day. Those who know us know that at Yanabeauté we always repeat the same thing: prevention is better than cure. And it is precisely now, between the end of September and October, that we build the skin we will have in January.

In this guide, we explain why autumn skincare requires a different approach compared with summer, what the real enemies of the skin are during the colder months, and how to establish an effective two-step protocol: a deep facial cleansing in the clinic and a personalized at-home medical skincare routine.

Why autumn is the most stressful season for the skin

People often think that summer is the hardest season for the skin because of the sun. In reality, summer leaves behind thickened skin, with pores congested by months of sunscreen, sweat, and saltwater, but otherwise still relatively "protected." It is in autumn that the situation changes, and for several reasons at once.

Cold weather and temperature changes

When the temperature drops, skin microcirculation slows down and the sebaceous glands produce less sebum. The hydrolipidic film, that thin layer of lipids and water protecting the skin's surface, becomes thinner. The result is skin that loses water more quickly (dermatologists refer to an increase in TEWL, transepidermal water loss), feels tight, looks dull, and becomes more reactive to any stimulus. Making matters worse are the constant temperature changes: several times a day, we go from the 10 degrees outside to 22 degrees in a heated venue, and every transition is a small stress for the capillaries and the skin barrier.

Humidity and heating

In autumn, Milan is humid outside and dry inside. Outdoor humidity encourages the proliferation of impurities and the feeling of "heavy" skin; radiator air, on the other hand, has an extremely low humidity level and dehydrates the epidermis hour after hour. The skin therefore has to manage two opposite conditions over the course of the same day, and often reacts with a familiar paradox: a shiny T-zone and dry cheeks, the classic "unbalanced" combination skin that worsens in autumn.

City smog

This is the most underestimated factor. Fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), which reaches its peaks in Milan precisely between October and February, consists of particles up to twenty times smaller than a pore. They settle on the skin, penetrate the stratum corneum, and generate free radicals that oxidize skin lipids and proteins. The long-term effects are documented: gray complexion, spots, low-grade inflammation, loss of firmness, and the early appearance of fine lines. It is no coincidence that scientific literature now refers to pollution aging, pollution-induced skin aging. Skin that is not properly cleansed and protected accumulates this damage day after day.

Summer's legacy

Added to all of this is the starting point: skin returning from vacation is almost always thickened, deeply dehydrated, and clogged with weeks of SPF, sweat, and chlorine. It is skin that needs to be "reset" before it can absorb any treatment or product. That is why our autumn protocol always begins with a cleanse.

Step 1: deep facial cleansing in the clinic

Before nourishing, hydrating, or treating, you need to cleanse. It is a step that no at-home skincare routine, however excellent, can replace. Applying an expensive serum to skin with a thickened stratum corneum and congested pores means wasting much of its effectiveness. That is why the first autumn appointment at Yanabeauté is always a deep facial cleansing treatment.

HydraFacial® Syndeo: the seasonal reset

HydraFacial® is the treatment we recommend as a starting point for practically every skin type. In a single session, thanks to the patented Vortex-Fusion technology of the Syndeo system, it addresses five areas: cleansing, peeling, extraction, hydration, and delivery of active ingredients. The spiral tip removes dead cells and the thickened layer left by summer, gently extracts impurities from the pores without traumatizing the skin, and simultaneously infuses serums based on hyaluronic acid, peptides, and antioxidants.

The benefit during the cold season is twofold. On the one hand, it removes everything summer has left on the surface, restoring smooth, receptive skin. On the other, it immediately begins working on deep hydration, the number-one defense against cold weather and heating. All without downtime: you leave the clinic with glowing skin and can immediately return to your day, a detail that is far from insignificant for anyone living life at Milanese speed.

For particularly congested or reactive skin after summer, the protocol can be personalized through the choice of acids (GlySal, Activ-4, or Beta-HD) and boosters, and combined with LED Therapy Dermalux, which calms inflammation and stimulates cellular regeneration.

Facial Exclusive® by Yanabeauté: the complete protocol

For those seeking a true seasonal reset, Facial Exclusive® by Yanabeauté is the treatment we recommend at the beginning of autumn. Winner of the Aesthetics Beauty Awards and named the best facial in Milan by Elle and Vanity Fair, it combines four treatments in a single protocol lasting approximately two hours: dermaplaning to remove the thickened surface layer and the fine hair that traps smog, HydraFacial for deep cleansing and hydration, LED Therapy for its anti-inflammatory effect, and finally a treatment with professional Biologique Recherche serums, selected according to the skin's Instant© that day.

It is the treatment our most loyal clients choose to open the season, because it prepares the skin comprehensively and immediately makes it more receptive to at-home care.

How often?

For autumn and winter, the ideal rhythm is one HydraFacial every four weeks, in line with the natural cycle of cellular renewal. In our experience, a monthly subscription results in skin that gets through winter without the loss of radiance and dry phases that many people consider inevitable. Facial Exclusive can be alternated with HydraFacial every two or three months as a maintenance treatment.

Step 2: at-home care with medical skincare

A clinic treatment lasts an hour, but skin lives twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The real result is built at home, consistently, using products that meet the standard. That is why at Yanabeauté we have chosen to work exclusively with three lines of medical skincare, for which we are authorized retailers in Milan: Biologique Recherche, iS Clinical, and Environ. Three different philosophies, three different origins, one thing in common: highly concentrated formulations supported by clinical research and designed to work in synergy with professional treatments.

Biologique Recherche: absolute personalization

Founded in Paris more than forty years ago, Biologique Recherche does not talk about "skin types" but about the Skin Instant©: the condition of the skin at that precise moment, which changes with the season, stress, and the environment. It is the perfect philosophy for autumn, when the skin changes rapidly. In our autumn protocol, there are three key products. The famous Lotion P50, the "treatment in a lotion" that gently exfoliates, rebalances pH, and prepares the skin to absorb everything that follows: it is the step that makes the difference against thickening and a smog-induced gray complexion. Crème Dermopurifiante, for skin that becomes congested again and develops impurities in autumn. And Masque Vivant, the yeast-based balancing mask that once a week purifies, brightens, and refines the skin's texture, ideal after a day in the city.

iS Clinical: cosmeceuticals from Los Angeles

iS Clinical is the Californian medical skincare line born from pharmaceutical research, with clinically tested botanical and patented formulations. For the cold season, our ideal routine begins with Active Serum, the brand's all-time best-seller: it renews the skin's surface, targets spots and imperfections, and restores radiance from the first applications. It is paired with Hydra-Cool Serum, which calms, refreshes, and deeply hydrates thanks to hyaluronic acid and antioxidants: perfect for reactive skin after temperature changes. Finally, Reparative Moisture Emulsion, the cream that repairs the skin barrier and protects against the cold without feeling heavy. Anyone who has had a HydraFacial can also gradually reintroduce iS Clinical Retinol, which in autumn, with less intense sunlight, becomes a valuable ally against signs of aging.

Environ: the science of vitamin A

Environ, founded in South Africa by plastic surgeon Des Fernandes, is built entirely around vitamin A, the molecule that more than any other normalizes the skin and helps it defend itself. Its step-up system, which gradually increases the concentration of vitamin A as the skin becomes accustomed to it, is designed to be safe and effective over the long term. Autumn is the ideal time to start or move up a level: sun exposure decreases, and the skin can fully benefit from vitamin A's regenerating action, which specifically counteracts the oxidative damage caused by smog and restores the thickness and firmness reduced by the cold. Our consultants guide each client in choosing the correct step and moving on to the next one.

The ideal autumn routine, in brief

Every skin is unique, and the routine should be created together in the clinic. But a reference plan for a Milanese autumn could be:

  • Morning: gentle cleansing, balancing lotion (Lotion P50), antioxidant and hydrating serum, barrier cream, and SPF 30 sunscreen. Yes, even in autumn: UVA rays pass through clouds, and smog amplifies oxidative damage.
  • Evening: double cleansing to remove pollutant particles accumulated throughout the day, lotion, active serum (Active Serum or Environ vitamin A, depending on the protocol), and repairing cream.
  • Once a week: purifying or balancing mask (Masque Vivant).
  • Once a month: HydraFacial in the clinic; Facial Exclusive every two or three months.

Mistakes to avoid in autumn

In our daily experience on Via Mercato, we see the same mistakes repeated again and again. The first is continuing with summer skincare: lightweight products and gels that are no longer enough to protect the barrier in October. The second is the opposite: suddenly switching to overly rich, occlusive creams that suffocate skin still congested from summer, resulting in new imperfections. The third is skipping evening cleansing or doing it hastily, leaving the day's fine particles on the skin. The fourth is abandoning sun protection. And the fifth, the most common, is postponing deep cleansing "until the skin gets worse": that is exactly the opposite of what is needed.
